When choosing fishing bait for surf fishing, there are a few things you must take in consideration. First what species of fish will you be targeting, for example if you are going to be fishing for Pompano you want to figure out what they feed on and when the best times to fish for them are; so if you where fishing for pompano you probably are going to use sand fleas or fiddler crabs, since this is there main diet.

Next you have to examine you bait if you are going to use natural bait, how does it look are the eyes of the bait clear? does the bait look fresh? You want to the bait to look as natural as possible on the hook, as some fish are very finicky and actually notice things. That is really no secret, if it is natural or artificial it must look natural.

If fishing with live bait they should probably be alive. Look for injury on the bait if the bait is dieing before you get to your fishing destination there is a good chance that they will die and or won’t be very active in the water. The idea is to make sure that you get healthy bait and this alone will increase you chances of catching fish or more fish. When purchasing bait, go to a credible bait store with satisfied customers and you should be able to get quality bait. It does cost money to go fishing so why take anything less then perfect bait.

When using dead bait my preferred method of keeping them fresh is to keep them iced down really well, what this does is keep them from spoiling but also keeps them form getting soft and dry. If you are using live baits, it is some what of a chore keeping them a live, but if successfully done the rewards can be greater. Normally you would want something that can hold 10 to 15 gallons of water and an aerator to pump oxygen into the water. Periodically you want to change the water to get the feces and scales out.

When choosing your bait remember, make sure you are using the right size bait for the species you are fishing for and always match the hatch, matching the hatch is just making sure that you use that bait that is most plentiful because this will be what the fish are feeding on. Just remember try different techniques and find your own personal favorite ways to fish, there is not just one way to fish, get out and have fun!
