Surf Fishing For Black Drum

Black drum fishing

Black drum fishing can be very fun often targeted surf fishing, they also are abundant around piers and bridges, black drum are the largest fish in the drum species. Averaging 30 to 50 pounds, they are very common up to 60 pounds. Black drum are very similar to there brothers the redfish, there characteristic are some what the same, black drum are great to eat when in the 6 to 8 pound range, they are not so great to eat when they start reaching 15 pounds or more.

You can visually distinguish a black drum from a red drum, the black drum being black and the red drum being red and also the size difference, the black drum is broader. When targeting black drum the best bait that I have found is half of a blue crab, like redfish they are often found searching shell bars and shorelines for crustaceans. So shrimp and other crustaceans will work as well. Typical tackle would be a stout rod, with a casting reel that holds ample amount 20 to 40 pound test line, black drum arn't the fastest fish but there weight and power is amazing. You would want to use a bottom rig because they are bottom feeders, there mouths are located more on the bottom of the fish, so you want to present your bait where they can see it.
